The Greencastle High School girls' soccer team added one tie to their 5-3 record Tuesday night in a contest against the Terre Haute South Braves at Dee Monnet Soccer Field.
"I was fine with tying them (Terre Haute South) tonight," said head girls' coach Maurice McKee. "They (the Braves) just came off of playing Ben Davis and Carmel (on Saturday) so to get a tie with them was a really good feat for the night."
The Braves struck early with a goal by sophomore Alexis Penwell after only 2:91 into the game, and managed to keep the ball on the Tiger Cubs side of the field for much of the first half. For that period, Terre Haute South's goalkeeper Lauren Hayes saw very little action.
But with 24:32 left to play in the first half, Greencastle's sophomore Whitney Brotherton scored, tying the game at 1-1. The Braves returned 26 seconds later with another goal by Penwell.
The Tiger Cubs kept a lot of pressure on Terre Haute South's back line for the remainder of the half, but in the end came up empty. At the end of the first half the score was 2-1 in favor of the Braves.
Terre Haute South would not score at all in the second half. Just 18:84 into the second half Greencastle's Hannah Spencer, a senior, scored, tying the game at 2-2. Each team continued to threaten the other but neither was able to score another goal and take the lead.
"My girls played a good game," McKee said. "We played a different team than what we've been used to playing. They (Terre Haute South) are a very finished team. Every time the ball is kicked to one of their teammates they automatically have two people in place to receive the ball. We just have to learn how to play in front of that [player] so we can have a chance of getting the ball. We figured that out later on in the evening and it really worked out fine. We're looking forward to seeing them again in sectionals."
The Tiger Cubs host the Northview Knights next Saturday morning at 10:45 at Dee Monnet Field.
