Despite the rain on Thursday evening the Greencastle Tiger Cubs varsity boy's soccer team won 5-0 against the North Putnam Cougars. GHS jumped on the Cougars early and were able to cruise to the victory.
GHS (6-1, 2-0 WCC) maintained control of the game, playing in North Putnam's end of the field until Tiger Cub senior Cary Russell scored a goal at 31:37.
The first half was all Tiger Cubs, as they added two more goals before the break. Cody Watson scored with an assist from Josh Bonebrake at 23:26. Shortly thereafter at 21:31 Destin Holmes got a goal off the rebound of a Brandon Query shot.
While the two teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the half, GHS clearly remained in control. GHS goalie Ryan Payne didn't see too much action during the first half.
After the half, the scoring remained elusive. GHS maintained ball control and had several good scoring opportunities, but were unable to find the net.
For the Cubs, the clear control of the game helped them get more players than usual involved in the game.
GHS coach Dave Lilly was pleased with his team's performance during the game. He said that he was glad that he was able to play all 27 of his players tonight, as this was the first game of the season that he was able to do so.
The Cubs finally broke through with the game's final score when freshman Ben Wilson found the back of the net with 1:35 to play.
For North Putnam (0-7, 0-1 WCC) a season of struggles continued with Thursday's match. Not only have the Cougars yet to win a match, they have not yet scored a goal on the season.
