Freshman scores two in Tiger Cubs' 3-1 win over West Vigo
A freshman had a big night for Greencastle Tuesday, scoring his first two varsity goals in the Tiger Cubs' 3-1 win over West Vigo.
Freshman Brandon Query picked up his first varsity goal of the season, taking an assist from teammate Nate Jones and beating the Vikings keeper Sean Burton with 25:23 to play in the first half. The Tiger Cubs (8-1) led 1-0.
The goal ignited the Tiger Cubs attack, forcing Burton to make another half dozen saves over the next five minutes of play.
With 18:19 remaining in the half, Query netted his second goal to put Greencastle ahead 2-0. Greg Lilly provided the assist.
The Vikings were not able to mount much of an offensive attack during most of the first half, however Trevor Keisheimer hit a shot just inside the goal post with 4:57 to go in the period to cut the lead to 2-1.
Ryan Payne had made three saves for the Tiger Cubs at the half against 12 for Burton, but the teams were only separated by one goal at the end of the first half.
The second half play was more even, as both teams battled hard to gain control of the game.
West Vigo's Rogelio Montemayor received a yellow card at 17:01 for persistent infringement, which is repeated violation of the rules of the game.
The Tiger Cubs effectively put the game out of reach with 13:46 to play, when Josh Bonebrake was able to beat Burton for the third goal of the match.
"The goal to put us ahead by two in the second half was critical," GHS coach Dave Lilly said. "Teams will continue to play with a lot of energy, even when very tired, when they are only one goal behind. Josh's goal took a lot of steam out of them."
The frustration soon became apparent as West Vigo's Andrew Kump received his team's second yellow card of the evening. Before he left the field during the subsequent substitution he was shown a red card for dissent towards the official.
The game ended with the score 3-1, with Payne recording five saves in the second half to Burton's 10.
