Cougars down Panthers 28-0

Saturday, September 20, 2008

ROACHDALE -- The undefeated North Putnam Cougars football team, currently ranked 3rd in the Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 2A poll, hosted the always tough, Park Tudor Panthers Friday night.

In the first half, in which North Putnam's offense generated 155 yards in offense, while the Cougar defense limited the Panthers to 27 yards. North Putnam, however, committed three turnovers and took a narrow 6-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

North Putnam's fortunes improved in the second, scoring four touchdowns, and improving its season record to 5-0, by defeating the Panthers 28-0.

In the first quarter, both teams were forced to punt on their first possessions, but North Putnam drove down the field on their second possession, moving the ball 39 yards in eight plays, with Griffen Dahlstrom scoring the first of his two touchdowns of the night with 2:48 left in the period.

On the next Park Tudor series, Jerrett Ban intercepted a Panther pass with 1:00 showing on the clock, ending any chance for the visitors to score in the first period.

In the second quarter, North Putnam, uncharacteristically, committed three turnovers; a fumble, and two interceptions.

However, the Cougar defense stepped-up, stopping every Park Tudor scoring opportunity, forcing the Panthers to punt twice, and to miss a field goal attempt with 33.8 seconds left in the half.

The second half would be a different story.

North Putnam stopped Park Tudor on their first possession, and Dahlstrom would score on the first offensive play of the second half for the Cougars, this time a 58-yard run. Dahlstrom scored a two-point conversion run, giving the home team a 14-0 lead.

After stopping the Panthers again, Darr Boruff would score for the Cougars on a 23-yard run. Rob Ford kicked the extra point, and North Putnam held a 21-0 advantage.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Shawn Diebold scored the final touchdown of the game for the Cougars, and the final score of 28-0.

North Putnam's offense overwhelmed Park Tudor, gaining 330 yards in total offense, while the Cougar defense limited the Panthers to 36 yards in total offense, and a -2 yards in rushing offense for the game.

"I was very excited with how we came out in the second half, "North Putnam head coach Greg Barrett said following the game.

"We talked to our players all week about Park Tudor's speed and they have some very talented athletes. We had some guys who really stepped-up tonight and played well," he said

"Jerrett Ban going down with an injury tonight will make a big impact on our team," Barrett added.

Dahlstrom gained 209 yards on 28 carries to lead the Cougars in rushing. Boruff followed with 36 yards on eight carries, Scott Hunt had 24 on six carries, and Jerrett Ban had nine yards on one rush.

As a team, North Putnam gained 271 rushing yards compared to Park Tudor's -2 yards on the ground.

Defensively, Randy Soriano led the Cougars with six tackles, followed by Dahlstrom with five.

Jim Davis and Diebold recovered a fumble, and Ban had an interception.

The Cougars (5-0, 2-0 WCC) celebrate Homecoming next Friday night by hosting WCC and County rival Greencastle. The game begins at 7:00 p.m.

  • Whoever wrote this, they need to check their stats. Crum didn't play for North. You also should factor in all those bad snaps for loss as a fumble for the quarterback, regardless who recovers the fumble. Resulting in negative yardage for the quarterback.

    Just an FYI.
