DePauw president inauguration set

Monday, October 6, 2008

Alumni, students, faculty and staff members, and friends are invited to celebrate the intellectual and creative life of DePauw and welcome the University's nineteenth president, Brian W. Casey, by participating in a series of events this week leading to Dr. Casey's inauguration.

Final preparations are being made for the week of Oct. 6-11, which carries the theme, "Uncommon Success: DePauw in the World."

Events will include an international photo display, lectures, musical and theatrical performances, science research and Honor Scholar senior thesis poster sessions, art exhibits and artist talks, international films, presentation of scholarly work by faculty members, and more. A complete schedule of events is available at the inaugural Web page.

The installation of President Casey will take place on Friday, October 10, at 4 p.m. in the Holton Memorial Quadrangle.

The ceremony program will feature a speech by Robert J. Zimmer, president of the University of Chicago; inaugural address by President Casey; poetry reading by Joseph "Joe" W. Heithaus, associate professor of English; greetings from representatives of the faculty, student body, staff, community and alumni; and music by the DePauw Gospel Choir and University Choirs.

Fifty-six delegates from other colleges, universities and educational organizations will witness the historic event, along with students, faculty and alumni.

The installation ceremony can also been seen and heard anywhere in the world via a webcast, which is being coordinated by the Indiana Higher Education Telecommuni-cations System.

The feed will be available via this link, and an archived version will be available after the event.

A reception and dinner will follow the installation ceremony. A free fireworks display will be launched from Bowman Park beginning at 9 p.m.

The celebration will continue when the band Third Eye Blind performs a concert at 10 p.m. in the Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are required for the concert.

After a nine-month international search, Brian W. Casey was announced as DePauw's new president in February, and he assumed office on July 1, 2008.

He came to DePauw from Harvard University, where he was associate dean for academic affairs in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

See the new president's recent appearance on television's Inside Indiana Business, and hear his welcoming address to DePauw's Class of 2012, delivered August 23.
