Cougars get victory in five games

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

The North Putnam volleyball team defeated Fountain Central in five games Monday, posting their sixth win of the season. The Cougars won the contest in five games 15-25, 25-16, 25-17, 16-25 and 15-13.

Despite the win, head coach Jill Schreiber wasn't happy with the level of play her squad exhibited.

"I don't feel like the girls played their best volleyball. Although it was a win -- it was ugly," she said. "For us to go into the match knowing we can win is a big confidence booster, but we did not take advantage of it. We played to the level of our opponents."

Taylor Alles and Carlye McGaughey helped lead North Putnam to the win. Alles recorded 14 kills, 16 digs, seven blocks and an ace, while McGaughey added six kills, 18 digs, one block and two aces on the night.

Logan Doyle also had a nice game for North, contributing seven kills, 15 digs, three blocks and two aces. Megan Robinson had five kills, 12 digs, seven blocks and two aces for the Cougars.

Schreiber noted that the team didn't come to the court with enthusiasm, but that she thought they came together and played well at times in the second, third and fifth game.

"I am proud of the girls in the fifth game. They did step up their play and take the lead to begin the game and never gave up the lead," Schreiber said.

North Putnam (6-14, 1-4 WCC) will host Southmont at 6 p.m. Thursday.
