Greencastle, North Putnam host first round games of football sectional

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

The IHSAA announced the pairings for the 2008 football sectional Tuesday night and some familiar foes will be facing off in the first round on Oct. 24.

In the 3A No. 21 sectional, Greencastle will host the Mounties of Southmont. Southmont and Greencastle face only one common opponent during the season, that being North Putnam. Greencastle fell to the Cougars 35-0, while Southmont was dismantled by North Putnam, losing 61-7.

The last time the Mounties and Tiger Cubs faced off was way back in 1997, when Southmont knocked GHS out of the first round of sectional 49-0.

A lot of eyes will be on the northern part of the county when the Class 2A No. 30 gets underway. Perhaps the marquee match up of the 2A sectional will be the South Putnam and North Putnam rematch.

The two teams met up on Sept. 12, with the Cougars walking away with a tough 20-6 victory. South Putnam's Drew Cash and North Putnam's Griffen Dahlstrom duked it out, with both runners going over 100 yards with a touchdown each.

The talk of a possible sectional rematch was on the lips of fans shortly after the game and now they'll get what they've asked for.

In the other game, Cloverdale heads east to Monrovia, an opponent they faced in week three of the season.

Cloverdale had a very rough outing, losing a fullback and starting quarterback to injuries and having a difficult time moving the ball in the process. The Clovers were only able to muster 66 rushing yards and 24 passing yards in the loss.

Each of the sectional game will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 24.

  • Im sure that it will be an early exit for the Cubs again, Im a GHS alum and love football but unless we get a new coach or he figures out that the system that he is running isnt goung to work there are going to be alot more losses. There is absolutely no enthusiasm from the team when they already have a feeling that they are going to lose. It also seems like theres no pride anymore,no tradition, and the players also need to realize that they arent out there just for themselves but for their school and the community. I will continue to go to the games and support the team but changes need to be made or the losing will continue.

  • Jester, with fans like you no wonder we don't have a lot of spirit! Did you play when you were in school?

  • Yes I played for coach Fallis so I have pretty good idea what Im talking about. Dedication, Commitment,Enthusiasm,Effort thats what we used to play for and thats what we seem to be lacking. Its not even the players that are necessarily the problem its just the lack of any emotion, and that stems from the coaching staff not doing their part to fire up these boys. I go to the games and see players shirts untucked , heads down when they get behind and just a total lack of motivation from anyone. As for my school spirit win or lose I try to go to all the home games and as many away games as I can. I sit in the stands and just shake my head because there are so few students there and it seems like the rest of the fans and parents arent even all that enthusiastic either. The bottom line is we need to get the team fired up. I will be at the game Fri. and I will be cheering and urging the team on but unless more people start to show more enthusiasm it will continue to be the same old thing.
