He was born on Nov. 21, 1948 in Crawfordsville to Mervin and Mary C. Walker Birge. Wally was a graduate of Linden High School and attended Ball State University.
Mr. Birge served his country in the U.S. Army 173rd Airborne Armor in Vietnam. He was a member of New Richmond (Linden) Lodge No. 604 F. & A.M., D.A.V., V.F.W. Post No. 1550, Deer Creek Coon Hunters Club and Carpenters' Local No. 859.
He had been employed with Verkler Construction for many years. Wally was an avid reader and loved his grandchildren.
His parents and one brother, David Birge preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Birge; children, Shelly Smith and husband, Scott, Brent Birge and Clint Birge; one brother, Darrell Birge and wife, Sandy; and four grandchildren, Rainey Birge, Madeline Birge, Tyler Smith and Deycon Birge.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Pastor Allen Sparks officiating. Interment will follow at Linden Cemetery, with military honors.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
