County seeing lots of early voters

Friday, October 31, 2008

Call it early voting, call it absentee voting -- either way, it's the same thing and this election, more Putnam County voters than ever are taking advantage of it.

"Oh my gosh, it's been just unbelievable," said Marty Watts, clerk of Putnam County's Superior and Circuit courts. "In the past, we'd maybe have 170 people in a week or two. Now we're having that many come in a day. And that's just walk-ins."

Early voting -- previously referred to as absentee voting -- has always been an option, but in this election the candidates have been focusing on making sure voters know it is available to them.

"This is a historic election," Watts pointed out. "The candidates and the media have been on a kick about reminding people about early voting, and it's just caught fire."

To date, 2,705 people have cast early votes in Putnam County. This includes 1,943 walk-ins, 148 taken by a travel team and 614 mail-in applications.

Secretary of State Todd Rokita estimated that 817,000 people in Indiana either registered to vote for the first time or updated their voter registration.

Watts said in her estimation, it seems as though voters just care more about this election than they may have cared about past ones.

"In the past, Indiana hasn't necessarily made an impact on how an election turned out," she said. "I mean, have you ever seen presidential candidates come to Indiana as often as they have this time around? I think it's made people care more, and that's a good thing."

Watts said she figured more people would come vote early this year, but that she wasn't prepared for how many actually did.

"Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected this kind of turnout," she said.

Watts lauded the efforts of election workers, who don't get paid much and have had to work harder this year than ever before.

"They've gone days without going to lunch," she said. "I make sure to bring them water and to bring in treats for them so they know how much I appreciate all their hard work. They are so dedicated."

Early voting will continue at the Putnam County Courthouse until Monday. Voters may cast ballots today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Neighboring counties are also experiencing an early voting boom.

In Clay County, 1,782 people have already voted. In Greene County, the number has topped 1,500.

  • you must be drinking a lot of kool-aid these days because you definately believe the american people cannot think for themselves. or the peolpe of indiana for that matter. the voice of "change" has changed his mind again about the tax cuts and now it will only affect those making $120,000 and less. by tomorrow it will be $60,000 and less. why would we vote for someone we cannot trust? how can you trust someone who changes his mind every other day? would you have as a friend someone who tells you a different story every day? i think not. indiana is a red state and will stay red.

  • Oh Please - Indiana IS a Red State and will always be a red State!! Who would vote for a Liar? Mr. Obama is getting his money from Alcida! Come on think people - we are in a recession - He isn't getting the $$ from his 'supporters'.

HE is evil very, very evil. THink about that! and think about what will happen IF this "Voice of change" Changes America and it's fellow people. We are in for some major change and it won't be good if you help elect him in. IN HIS BOOK HE SAID THAT HE WOULD TAKE AFGANASTAN OVER US. Wake up and smell the lies PEOPLE! It's right in front of your face and You TRUST HIM?

Remember - Hitler was voted in too.

By your logic, Bush was voted in also.

Do you have any proof that he got money from Al Qaeda (which really is not as hard to spell as you make it seem) ?

And where in his book does it say he would take Afghanistan (again, not very hard to spell) over the US?

I'm tempted to think someone's been taking e-mail forwards a little too seriously.

forget the book. obama said in one of his debates with hillary that he would, not only move the troops from iraq to afghaanistan, but that he would invade pakistan as well. apparently you don't follow the news or you only listen to msnbc. and typical obama tactics. when he doesn't have an answer he makes fun or calls everyone a racist. a typo is a typo, you have never made one?

and maybe you should take a little journey into the world of "looking up information". if you would have you would understand why obama is not only unqualified to be president but dangerous as well. he already has his minnions like you, all they need now are the black boots.

    oh, and

"By your logic, Bush was voted in also."

    huh?

  • Indiana is a RED state and will stay that way. I can't believe people are falling for Obama's lies. He wants to change the constitution. He even wants a 2nd bill of rights. Our forefathers would turn over in their graves. We won't have a free country if Obama gets elected.

Even closer to home. The dems need to check their facts before making statements that are not true.

right on ladycubs, you rock. i'm a democrat voting for mccain and being a democrat does not give anybody and excuse for ignorance. our founding fathers also said it was our duty as citizens of the united states to be INFORMED. to QUESTION AUTHORITY. ever notice how obama does not like being questioned? if he had been questioned (vetted) from the beginning he would not be running for president.

obama is a very dangerous man. if elected he would bring in the "chicago boys" economics and you can kiss your 401k good-bye.

  • Goodness - this race has taken the happiness out of everyone.. A typo is a typo nativeillinoisan. If you are in Illinois, why are you commenting on an Indiana country town Newspaper? do you have no life?

Obama will ruin America. and it will be your fault along with all the others who voted for him. you can't blame anyone but yourself if HE gets elected and America Changes for the worse. Why are you VOTING for him? he never answers questions that are asked of him, he is wishy washy. McCain has always been honest about where he is from, his Birth Certificate was given when asked, etc. He is a fellow AMERICAN - Not Obama! Obama doesn't even have a birth certificate in America! Hawii has closed that down until he is elected.

9/11 happened behind our backs, we didn't know it was coming, THis time it is happening and it is right in your FACE and you aren't seeing it!! He is not coming in on some plains to distroy buildings with inocent people in them, he is GETTING VOTED IN BY YOU!!!!!

    Be afraid, be very afraid...

Pointing out that Bush was voted in was just to point out luv2bmom2001's logical fallacy that Obama was somehow comparable to Hitler just because they were both voted into office - I pointed out that Bush was voted into office showing that mentioning that Hitler being voted into office was irrelevant and not a logical basis for comparison.

In regard to Pakistan and Afghanistan, are you trying to maintain that they are not threats for some reason? Honestly, between being willing to stay in Iraq for 100 years and fortifying military presence in which the U.S. military is already present (meaning it wouldn't be an invasion), no one really comes out ahead. Maybe you should be the one looking up information, especially considering the fact that you are telling me to look up information on subjective, value-based judgments rather than objective information. As far as making typos, the comment box even shows you when you're making spelling errors, good grief.

    luv2bemom2001:

You completely misconstrue my username. I am native to Illinois (meaning I was born there, like the word native means if you look it up in a dictionary), but I currently live in Indiana near Greencastle. As far as Obama's birth certificate, go to factcheck.org, a non-partisan website that essentially proves Obama's Hawaiian birth. If you are basing your vote on the question a birth certificate, i.e. a completely irrelevant issue (do you not think the RNC would have fought this more if they thought something was up?), then I truly feel sorry for you. Also, where are these plans to blow up buildings? Just something you made up? Or did FoxNews feed it to you?

I said - He is NOT coming in on some plains to distroy buildings with inocent people in them, he is GETTING VOTED IN BY YOU!!!!! The buildings happened in 2001. you don't remember?

Hey don't say you weren't warned about voting for him when it blows up in your face.

He doesn't even salute our FLAG! He won't say the Pledge of Allegiance why do you want a president like that? He doesn't even want the military around him. Do you not see what is staring you in the face?

I just can't imagine voting for someone that doesn't even salute our flag, has never ran a business, never served our country, and is secretive about everything. It's sad that he has sucked you into his little world.

    McCain is a TRUE American!

yes i do make typos so that is something to make fun of? grow up. i was not talking of hitler being voted it, which he was, i was referring to obama and his minnions, about hitler and the hitler youth and about missoulini and his youth movement and if you cannot see the connection then you need to look up your history.

and i was not talking of setting up more bases near pakistan. obama said he would "invade" pakistan. don't you get it? he's not the one you think he is. he will pull some troops out of iraq but not all. go back to the comments on bbc by his foreign affairs advisor Samantha Powers, "he (obama) will not be hold himself to what he says on the campaign trail". and no, pakistan is not a threat to us anymore than iraq was a threat to us after 9/11.

and why was my comment about looking up information subjective? research is objective. it is the person reading it that makes it subjective. duh.

one more thing. if obama was a u.s. citizen why not show an original birth certificate? plus the fact that obama was raised in indonesia and went to the public school there. YOU HAD TO BE A CITIZEN AND MUSLEM TO ATTEND PUBLIC SCHOOL IN INDONESIA. because obama was adopted by his stepfather he does not qualify for POTUS.

  • luv2bmom & cosmosis:

You neglect that fact that Obama attended both Muslim and Catholic schools in Indonesia. From snopes.com who actually knows what they're talking about:

"The school Barack Obama attended in Indonesia was "Muslim" primarily in the sense that the preponderance of its student body was Muslim (because Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country), but both the Muslim and Catholic schools he attended in Indonesia offered a few hours of religious instruction each week."

As far as not saying the Pledge of Allegiance and saluting the flag, visit these links:

    http://thinkonthesethings.wordpress.com/2007/11/02/barack-obama-refused-to-say-t...

    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact-checker/2007/11/obama_nabbed_by_the_patrioti...

Also a Certification of Live Birth counts just as much as an original birth certificate:

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthcertificate.asp

Also, please try to find when Obama said he would "invade" Pakistan. The fact that you use quotes around invade tells me you know you're misquoting, read the following about that:

    http://mediamatters.org/items/200801280009

Also, the comment about looking up information was subjective in that you were the one who attached the subjective value judgment of being unqualified when you used the phrase "looking up information". Geesh.
