Putnam County soldiers make it home for Thanksgiving

Friday, November 28, 2008
Spc. Anthony Smith of Greencastle is welcomed home Wednesday by his wife, Judith. Smith was deployed to Iraq in January.

Three Putnam County families had something extra to be thankful for this year -- their soldiers made it home from Iraq in time for Thanksgiving.

Spc. Anthony Smith and Spc. Loren Leonard, both of Greencastle, and Spc. Joseph Cope of Bainbridge, members of Alpha Battery 2nd Battalion 150th Field Artillery, all came home late Wednesday morning. Smith and Leonard were transported to the National Guard Armory in Greencastle, while Cope was taken to Stout Field in Indianapolis.

Spc. Smith was deployed in January. He was welcomed home Wednesday by his wife Judith and daughters Kaitlyn and Jordan Gill and Emma-Claire Smith.

"He just called me last night to tell me he was coming in today," Judith said, smiling brightly.

The Smiths have been together for 15 years. They were married in February.

"It is great to be back," Spc. Smith said. "I can't really talk too much about what I did over there ... I will say it was interesting, and I'm glad to be home. I wish I could say something about it; I just can't."

Judith noted that her husband's homecoming took place "right back where we started."

"This is where he enlisted," she said, looking around the armory. "This is where he began his military service."

Spc. Leonard -- who, like Spc. Smith, is a Greencastle High School graduate -- was deployed in March. He was rendered speechless when he finally made it back home.

"Words can't describe it," he said. "We got a police escort through Crawfordsville ... it's just kind of overwhelming, the support we get from people."

  • It is too bad that the Banner did not let us know we had soldiers returning. I for one would have been there to say Welcome Home.

    Response by Banner Graphic:
We were not made aware the soldiers were coming back until less than a half-hour before they arrived.
  • Welcome home!! And most importantly THANK YOU!

~reader 2...I am a military wife and last year my husband was deployed overseas...I, as his immediate family didn't know when my husband was coming home until 10hrs before he flew into Indpls Airport. It's for their safetly. It's great to hear of others though, who respect the military and support them and show the enthusiasm in wanting to help welcome them home.

  • I am the Father of Spc. Joseph Cope and I found out just the night before he arrived back on Indiana Soil. They actually landed in Indy on 11/21 and spent a few days to demobilize at Camp Atterbury. Fortunately they were able to finish that and be home with us for Thanksgiving. Joseph has a brother that was also in Iraq for the past several months that returned to Indiana soil early on Thanksgiving morning. There is a plan that Spc. Richard Cope and several others from the Putnam County area will be returned to the Greencastle Armory on Tuesday Morning. Count on myself and several other being there to welcome all of these fine young men back home.

  • First of all - to the soldiers, and their families: welcome home, and thank you all for your service and the things that you've endured for all of us.

I grew up in Greencastle, and am now living in Dayton, OH. It's so nice to come here and read stories like this... but the comments? Even better. In Dayton, the comments on a story like this would degenrate into attacks on the government, the president, the president elect, how the city is going to h*ll, etc. Here? It's nothing but nice comments and love. I'm so glad I was raised in a caring and intelligent community, and that I'm passing those values on to my son, regardless of where he's being raised.
