Cloverdale's 6-foot-9 center Link Lovins easily scores over 6-3 Kyle Everett of Monrovia in the first quarter Friday night.

CLOVERDALE -- Cloverdale played Monrovia even for a half, but the Bulldogs dominated the third quarter and went on to a 66-51 victory in a West Central Conference boys basketball game Friday on the Clovers' court.

The game was tied 27-27 going into the third quarter. Monrovia (3-2, 2-1 WCC) blitzed the Clovers 21-4 (1-5, 0-2) in it to take a 48-31 lead.

"We played well for a half," Cloverdale coach Pat Rady said. "The third quarter was our Achilles' heel. They (Monrovia) came out and hit a quick shot, then had a steal for a basket and we took a quick shot and they scored again.

Those runs happen even though I called a time out (early in the third quarter).

"You've got to have some guys step up when the pressure is on. Our shot selection needs to greatly improve and we need to cut down on turnovers. We're not a good team right now, but we can be a good team this season."

Monrovia went on an 8-0 run to start the second half and closed it out with a 9-0 sparked by two 3-point shots by backup guard Brent McCleerey.

The Clovers trailed by 19 early in the fourth quarter, but cut their deficit to 11 with 2:52 to play and again in the final minute.

"We didn't quit, we got back within 11," Rady said.

Brandon Moon led the Clovers with 15 points, but was only 5-of-20 from the field and 2-of-11 on 3-pointers.

Cloverdale made only 33.9 percent (18-of-53) of its field goals attempts. The Clovers were also out-rebounded, 41-19.

Forward Jordan Standeford scored 18 on 8-of-11 from the the field, including his only 3-pointer, and 1-of-2 at the foul line. Standeford's 3-pointer was the first basket of the second half.

Forward Grant Watson added 16 for the Bulldogs of 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-5 at the foul line.

Cloverdale plays tonight at Tri-West.
