Roy L. "Pete" Baldwin, 86, of Columbus died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 18, 1922, at Campbellsville, Ky., the son of Emmett Walter and Martha Jane Mings Baldwin.

Mr. Baldwin was a truck driver for Albert Rittman through Stadler's Meat Packing Company. He retired from the State of Indiana as a Refrigeration Supervisor. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge. He was awarded the Distinguished Hoosier Award by Governor Orr. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela R. Shepherd of Columbus; grandchildren, Laura Chrisp and husband Anthony of Columbus, Michael Spires and wife Ginger of Indianapolis and Lisa McCall of Huntersville, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his longtime companion, Mary Jo Smith; brothers, Frank Baldwin, Fred Baldwin, William Baldwin, and one adolescent brother; and sisters, Nellie Despain, Montie Taylor and one adolescent sister.

The funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Bennett officiating. Calling will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from noon until time of service. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
