CLAYTON -- The Greencastle Tiger Cubs girls basketball team roared into Clayton Friday night and spoiled Cascade's Homecoming with a 46-29 defeat of Cascade's Lady cadets. Chelsea Samuels emerged as the top scorer for the Cubs, bringing 14 points home for Greencastle, while Becky Grivas and Hannah Spencer contributed 10 points each.

Grivas scored the first four points of the game, but then Cascade's Alex Morgan and Brittany Salee tied it up 3:43 into the game. Greencastle's Hannah Spencer added the next four points with back to back baskets answered once again by Morgan and Salee. The Tiger Cubs closed the quarter with a bucket by Chelsea Samuels, giving Greencastle a 10-8 lead over the Cadets

Samuels came back hungry for more the second quarter, starting the Tiger Cubs off with a three pointer. Kayla Nobles also put up three, 1:37 later. The Cubs scored four more times during this quarter, to Cascade's three baskets and a free throw. At halftime, the score was 24-15 in favor of Greencastle.

Greencastle's momentum continued in the third quarter with the Tiger Cubs outscoring the Cadets 11- 6 with baskets by Grivas, Mallory Miller, and Samuels, one of which was free throw.

Most of the Tiger Cubs points in the fourth quarter came from the foul line. After Tenille Burgeson scored a regular bucket, Greencastle sent Samuels, Spencer, Cassie Alspaugh, and Miller to the line. Spencer finished off the quarter with a regular basket and a free throw.

"This was as good as we've played in a long time," said Greencastle's head coach Glenn Hile. "Our defense was outstanding tonight. We came in here with the objective to hold Alex Morgan under average, she got 10 [points], we wanted to hold Salee under hers, she got 7, and our help side defense was just outstanding. We could've handled the ball a little bit better on offense but we scored enough points to win, and the wins have been far and few between these last nine games."

" The really big highlight tonight for us was Chelsea Samuels. . . If she plays like that a lot, people can worry about her instead of about Becky [Grivas] all the time. Becky played real well; she got us off to a fast start and that's what we needed. [In past games] we haven't been starting fast."

Coach Hile added that the game was "a real good team effort. We had to play the last five minutes with a line-up we don't usually play. We had four guards and a post player out there [at the end]." He noted Kayla [Nobles'] contribution as especially strong in the fourth quarter.

The win tonight makes the girl's overall record 6-8, 2-1 in the WCC. They will travel to Turkey Run today to take on the Warriors at 1 p.m.
