Tiger Sharks dominate in tri-meet

Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Mitch Ball makes his way down his lane in the Greencastle pool on Monday. Ball finished the race third with a time of 1:03.90.

With the post season less than four weeks away, the Tiger Sharks are starting to concentrate on the Crawfordsville Sectional and the state meet and not their dual meets; but you wouldn't have noticed that Monday night as they demolished North Montgomery and Danville High School.

The Tiger Sharks beat Danville 66-35 and blew by sectional opponent North Montgomery 76-26.

"Right now we are winding down our season and our focus right now is on the sectional and state and not our dual meets, but we wanted to swim well tonight (Monday)", GHS coach Daniel Bretscher said. "North Mont is one of the more competitive teams in our sectional and we wanted to show up and swim well tonight, but our focus is more on the sectional and the post season."

The Tiger Sharks won all but three events Monday in the one-meter diving, the 100-yard butterfly, and the 100-yard freestyle.

One Tiger Shark that stood out from the rest Monday was Jay Guffey. He swam two races for Greencastle, the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM. He just missed the blue ribbon in the 100 by three-hundredths of a second with a time of 51.60, but won the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.05.

"Jay Guffey had two really good swims tonight," Bretscher said. "Both of his races were really close and he pushed himself to stay with the faster kids tonight."

Even though the season is winding down for Greencastle, the Tiger Sharks still have a couple tough meets coming up one of which is the Patriots of Terre Haute North.

Now Bretscher has seen the Patriots swim and has seen what that team can bring and knows that the one thing that could hurt this team is depth.

"We're really strong up front and we have a real solid group of five or six guys and they have won a lot of our meets for us this year, but what has lost us those couple of meets for us this season is our lack of depth," Bretscher said. "We really don't have our second and third swimmer all the time.

"We still want to swim well even though we are concentrating on the sectional coming up, but if we have an off meet here and there I'm not going to worry about it," Bretscher said. "When I talk to the guys during practices now it's about the sectional and state meet and not about the dual meets."

The Tiger Sharks are back in action on Wednesday at Terre Haute North starting at 6 p.m.
