GMS swimmers battle twice in three days
The Greencastle swim teams swam against Southmont Tuesday and Tuttle Thursday. The girls won both meets, while the boys went 1-1.
Against Southmont, the girls' squad captured seven individual events and all three relays en route to their 123-59 win.
Rosio Gomez took two events, the 200-yard freestyle (2:43.55) and the 50-yard butterfly (36.93). Emily Wheeler won the 100-yard IM (1:21.49), with Harriett Watson winning the 50-yard freestyle (29.90) and Sydney Cassida winning the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.06). Abigail Wilson took honors in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:36.41) as Alexis Branagin won the diving event (51.50).
The 400-yard relay team of Gomez, Cassida, Watson and Rachel Custis won in a time of 4:51.64, while the 200-yard medley relay team of Wheeler, Gomez, Watson and Hannah Gellman won with a time of 2:29.33. Custis, Wheeler, Cassida and Haylie Romer teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 2:10.68.
The boys picked up eight overall wins, winning 100-63.
Nash Firebaugh was the Tiger Cubs' top finisher with two wins. He won the 100-yard IM (1:11.61) and the 50-yard butterfly (27.91). Alex Asbell captured the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.67). Elijah Brattain won the 100-yard backstroke (1:15.28), while Caleb Robinson won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:23.51).
The 200-yard medley relay team of Brattain, Robinson, Firebaugh and Evan Smith won in a time of 2:09.75. Robinson, Asbell, Lee Hayes and Riley Boswell won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:59.93.
The GMS girls continued their winning ways against Tuttle, winning 11 total events and the event 120-66.
Haylie Romer and Harriett Watson won two events each to lead the Tiger Cubs. Romer won the 200-yard free (2:37.51) and the 400-yard freestyle (5:46.96), while Watson paced the field in the 50-yard free (30.36) and the 100-yard free (1:11.26).
Wheeler won the 100-yard IM (1:20), with Gomez winning the 50-yard free (36.38) and Kaitlynne Mason won the 100-yard backstroke (1:20.57). Wilson captured the 100-yard breaststroke (1:35.18).
The team also recorded three relay wins, beginning with the 200-yard medley relay team of Wheeler, Gomez, Wilson and Watson winning in 2:27.20. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Custis, Romer, Wheeler and Danielle Burton won in a time of 2:13.22, while 400-yard freestyle relay team of Romer, Custis, Gomez and Watson won in 4:58.08.
The boys' team only captured four overall events on the evening, but was narrowly defeated 99-86 by Tuttle.
Robinson won the 400-yard freestyle (4:57.84) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:20.06), while Firebaugh won the 50-yard butterfly (28.10).
The Tiger Cubs only relay win came in the 400-yard freestyle when Firebaugh, Asbell, Hayes and Boswell united to win in a time of 4:30.43.
Greencastle will travel to North Putnam Tuesday at 6 p.m.
