Valley Girls Women's Fitness Center comes to Cloverdale

Geneva Green turns on a toning table for Chris Taylor at the Valley Girls Women's Fitness Center in Cloverdale. The women only gym opened in January.

A gorgeous body is a dream most women don't really expect to achieve, but a toned, healthy body is possible, especially with the opening of Valley Girls Women's Fitness Center in downtown Cloverdale.

The new women only gym offers a program using toning tables as well as cardio workout equipment.

Owner Geneva Green also operates a Valley Girls Fitness Center in Spencer.

"We started out in a little bitty house across from the Owen County Bank. We outgrew it pretty quickly and moved to our current location," said Green.

She and her husband Matt already owned the building in Cloverdale and had rented it out to another business. When that company decided to close, Green opted to open another fitness center.

"Spencer and Cloverdale don't have access to a YMCA, so this seemed like a good place to go," she said.

The new center opened in January and is slowly building clientele.

It helps that the toning tables can be used over a lunch hour.

"We have quite a few women who come at lunch. They don't even have to change out of their work clothes if they don't want to. The toning tables don't make you sweaty," noted Green.

Toning tables are a set of motorized machines that provide gentle exercise to help build strength, endurance and flexibility. A ten-minute session on each machine works the tummy, hips, abdomen, buttocks, legs and arms.

"For example, the leg machine tones and firms your legs, inner thighs, knees and outer thighs. A ten-minute session simulates a two-mile walk," said Green.

She recommends at least three visits a week for the machines. Those who want more of a workout are encouraged to use the cardio equipment in addition to the toning tables.

A back room is available for freestanding exercise, work with stability balls or stretching. Green plans to add a climbing wall in the near future.

Green tests new exercises out nightly along with her husband and son Jacob.

"We exercise together every night. We try new things and I choose the exercises that I think will work for women," she said.

Her business is truly a family affair. Daughter Mikala is the receptionist in the Spencer store. Matt is her researcher. Son Jacob helps determine exercises and contributes new ideas -- like the climbing wall.

"Matt does all the research for me. He is the one who found the tables for us. In fact, the first one we bought we won in a bid by $1. Afterward, I got scared and tried to get out of it. But Matt talked me back into it," laughed Green.

She wanted her own business for a long time and has always been interested in nutrition and exercise. After years of careful research and some prompting from her husband she was ready to start her own company.

"So far, it's been really good. I couldn't do it without my family and that includes Joanne Allee and Kitty Blaney who work in the Cloverdale and Spencer centers," she added.

Each session is $6 each or customers mayn pay a monthly fee of $39. There are no contracts required and Green hopes to have an automatic payment system set up soon.

Hours right now are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Green plans to extend to evening hours at some point.

Valley Girls is located at 62 S. Main St in Cloverdale. Call them at 765-795-2980 to set an appointment. In Spencer they are at 252 W. Morgan St. and can be reached at 812-828-9650.

  • What happened to the YMCA in Spencer? Are they not using it anymore? The building was still there a couple of weeks ago.

  • Posted by Harmony Church and you are negative. Good example. It is a work out and effort, that's what counts. Good for you if you are at least trying something.

  • Chicago Girl, Yes I am guilty for being negative and the toning tables are better than nothing. I hope the toning tables will inspire people to work out more without machines.

  • The YMCA is still there is Owen County. Lots of great programs, my family lives in Owen County and we love going to the YMCA. Growing up in Putnam County, this is exactly what Greencastle needs.

  • Before passing judgement on using toning tables, you should at least try it out. It looks like the article said they offered other things such as cardio workout equipment with an exercise room in the back along with the tables. Also, there are some people who cannot do the "normal" types of exercise. This sounds like a great way to help them.
