John William English Sr., 81, of Bainbridge died on Sunday, March 29, 2009.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1927 in Worth, Ill. to Ralph and Bessie Elizabeth Baker English. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and retired from Twiggs in Martinsville.

Mr. English married Audrey Maxine Pleake on March 26, 1949 and they lived on Wilbur Road outside of Martinsville for 49 years. In 1997, they moved to Bainbridge to help with their son's Buffalo Farm, where he enjoyed mushroom hunting, walking with his dog Brutus in the woods, hunting and fishing. On Thursday, March 26, 2009, the afternoon of their 60th wedding anniversary, John suffered a massive stroke after being sick with the flu for over a week.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Audrey Maxine English; children, John W. English, Jr. and wife Sheila of Bainbridge, Bruce A. English and wife Yong of Indianapolis, Debra L. Nail and husband Eddie of Quincy and Barbara J. Stanifer and husband Ron of Plainfield; a sister, Barbara Tamerler and husband Walt of Florida; seven grandchildren, Jason W. English, Edward W. Nail and wife Sunny, Tony Nail and wife Sarah, Lisa A. Law and husband Jason, Nina A. Allen and husband Damon, Amy M. English and Kyle W. English; and 10 great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn English, Alyson English, Yasmin Nail, Meaghan Nail, Chloe Nail, Zoe Law, Maddox Law, Dylan Allen, Nyah Allen and Landon English.

His parents, a brother, Ralph English, Jr. and a sister, Hannah L. Shores preceded him in death.
