The Greencastle boys' golf team paced a six-team field to win the Tiger Cub Classic Saturday. The Tiger Cubs scored 323 to defeated second place Turkey Run with 328. Tri-West was third with a 355, Whiteland was fourth with a 372, Southmont was fifth with a 387 and Greencastle gray was sixth with a 398.
"We're happy to get the win, and Turkey Run gave us the competition that we thought they would. They are a solid golf team, and it was a lot of fun to duke it out with them," GHS head coach Donovan Wheeler.
GHS freshman Brad Haussin was medalist for the tournament with a 77. Teammates Luke Crimmins and Wade Huber finished with a pair of 80s, Jimmy Wheeler carded an 86 and Tyler Hopkins ended the day with a 97.
Greencastle's gray squad was led by Adam Jayne with a 91, while Derik Thomas shot a 99. Raymond Stenson shot a 102, J.T. Hennette shot a 106 and Dakota Miller carded a 112.
Wheeler's two seniors, Crimmins and Huber, had solid rounds for the team, but it was the way their scores came about that impressed their coach.
"I was happy for both seniors because they each had to work very hard to pull out their numbers," Wheeler said. "Wade got off to a terrible start and on the threshold of a total implosion, but he gathered himself and put together a great recovery. Luke started to leak early in his back nine but was able to put together a 1-under finish on his closing five holes.
"That's the sort of leadership we need from the seniors; more than anyone else, they have to show these guys how important finishing strong is in tournament golf," he added.
