South Putnam defeats Rockville

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

With the three biggest track meets of the season less than a week away, now is the time coaches want their athletes peaking.

That's exactly what the South Putnam coaches got Monday night as both Eagle track teams defeated Rockville. The boys won 77-52, while the girls won 71-56.

Both coaches agreed that the win against Rockville was a great victory.

"Coming off of prom weekend, we had a lot of things going on, but we had some of our season best times tonight," SPHS boys' Coach Carl coons said.

One of those season best times came from Andrew Northrup in the 3,200 meter race. He won the race with time of 11:01. Also securing a personal best Monday evening was Dayne Nelson. Nelson ran a :24 flat in the 200, finishing second for the evening. Nelson won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.03 and the pole vault, clearing a height of 10-feet-2-inches.

There were two other track stars who got Coons' attention Monday night -- Chris Smiley and Adam Masters.

"Smiley ran well again in the hurdle events, and Adam Masters threw well in the shot," Coons said.

Smiley won both hurdle events, running an 18.06 in the 110 and 46.03 in the 300 hurdles. Master claimed victory in the shot put with a toss of 44-feet-4-inches.

Tyler Heavin also finished first in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:21.60.

Also finishing first was the 400 meter relay team who ran a 49.03.

"Overall I was pleased with what we did," Coons said. "The last half of the meet went really well for us and I appreciate what the kids did for us coming back from a long weekend."

In the girls' meet, it was Rachel Egold and the 1,600 meter relay team that were the stars of the evening.

Egold ran a personal best 2:32.40 in the 800 meter run and won the race by over 22 seconds. Then in the 1,600 meter race, Egold, along with Madi Marsteller, Kelsey Heller and Viola Otto, ran a season best time of 4:50.30, finishing second.

"This was definitely a good win for us," Eagle Coach Kate Atkinson said. "Rachel and the 1,600 relay team ran personal bests."

Outside of the fact that it had two personal bests set Monday night, South Putnam had seven other first place finishes.

Chelsea Vance won the pole vault, clearing a height of 6-feet, while Brittany Cox captured the win in the discus, throwing 98-feet-9-inches. Leeah Butts came through for the Eagles in the long jump, finishing first with a leap of 13-feet-1-inch and Amanda Lund crushed the competition in the in the 1,600 meter race with a time of 6:24.77, six seconds faster than her teammate Mikayla Cherry and nearly a minute faster than Rockville's runner.

Cherry got her satisfaction in the 3,200 meter race when she ran a 15:03.72 for first place, nine seconds faster than Rockville's runner.

Also finishing first was the 3,200 relay team, with a time of 11:24.59 and the 400 relay team with a time of 1:04.59.

"This was just a good meet for us," Atkinson said. "We had couple people run events that they normally don't run because of people being sick or leaving school early, but that gives them some experience.

"This was just a good meet to have at the end of the year," Atkinson said.
