Wheeler powers GHS past Danville

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

The Greencastle boys' golf team mauled the Warriors of Danville 158-191 Monday night.

Jimmy Wheeler led the Tiger Cubs with a low round of 37, followed by Brad Haussin and Wade Huber with a pair of 40s. Luke Crimmins contributed a 41 and Adam Jayne carded a 48.

For coach Donovan Wheeler, the round was special for him. His team came together and put together four wonderful score, but one score stood above the rest.

"This was a great outing for the team today," GHS head coach Wheeler said. "It's hard for me not to feel especially proud of Jimmy. I was worried that Saturday's round might have derailed the strong momentum he was building the week before, but he rebounded from that rough tournament with one of the best, most complete rounds I've seen him play. He almost slam dunked his second shot on the last hole for eagle and finished with a tap-in birdie."

Wheeler noted that Haussin, Crimmins and Huber were unhappy with the rounds they posted. He acknowledged that though the team didn't play flawlessly, they did exactly what they needed to do.

"They took a rough day for them out there and gave us scores that helped us break 160. Wade has sort of turned scrambling and coming back from the dead into his trademark, but all of this is making him a stronger, more mentally tough golfer. He may not be putting up the lowest numbers, but he's showing everyone how to fight and how to compete," Wheeler said.

In junior varsity action, Greencastle defeated Danville 197-256.

Raymond Stinson's round of 44 led the way, with Tyler Hopkins following with a 45 and Derik Thomas with a 49. J.T. Hennette chipped in a round of 59 for GHS.
