5 individuals, 1 relay advance to regional

Dee Wood prepares to land after making her leap in the long jump event at the South Putnam track sectional.

Favorable weather welcomed track athletes as they descended on South Putnam for the girls' track sectional. For the first time in many years, all three competing county schools will have athletes advancing to regional action.

Greencastle finished in fourth place with a total of 56 points, while South Putnam was 10th with 16 points and North Putnam placed 11th with six points.

Greencastle will have two individuals and one relay team heading to the West Lafayette regional.

Dee Wood took the 100 meter dash in a time of 12.97, while Caitlin Gannaway finished second in the shot put event with a toss of 39-feet even.

The 3,200 meter relay team of Emily Gill, Faith Fear, Ivonne Martinez and Sara Culler placed fourth in the event with a time of 10:25.59, good enough to move on.

"We knew that we wouldn't be as powerful as Avon or Brownsburg by no means," GHS head coach Garry Anderson said. "Brownsburg is ranked No. 12 in the state -- they're a pretty good team and the just beat Avon. With that in mind I had to make some tough decisions."

Anderson noted that his team is young, but continued to learn as the season progressed.

Always the competitor, Anderson was a little disappointed that the team didn't finish higher, but acknowledged that he got some big performances out of his team.

"Not bad I guess," Anderson said of his team's finish. "I'm proud of them; some ran personal bests. Emily Gill had a good night tonight. Dee Wood was exceptional -- that long jump was nearly a school record. She was real close. She's had an exceptional year."

In the shot put, Gannaway battled Plainfield's Morgan Ford down to the wire, ultimately falling four inches short. Anderson noted how pleased he was with her performance, but vowed that the next week before regional would see a lot of hard work put in.

"Caitlin Gannaway had a fine night again tonight. Not as good as she did in conference, but she's in the regional now and we have a whole week to work on it -- and we will work," Anderson commented.

South Putnam has one runner and one thrower moving on to the regional.

Rachel Egold placed fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:28.50 to advance. Brittany Cox will move on in the discus and did it exciting fashion. Down to her final throw, Cox bombed a throw of 99-feet-4-inches to move into third position and punch her ticket to West Lafayette.

"We have two regional qualifiers, which is what we were expecting. It was what we expected, so it was nice to see them achieve that," South Putnam head coach Kate Atkinson said.

She had another relay just miss the cut and hopes that the athletes will use Tuesday's meet as a motivator for next season.

"Our 3,200 relay was close," Atkinson said. "We tweaked the order a little bit, put them in a good spot, but just ran out of energy at the end. They had a personal best tonight so that was good.

"Overall, it was a good night for us. For a lot of the girls, they were able to end on a high note and hopefully piques their enthusiasm to get back after it with more improvements next year."

For the first time at the helm of the girls' track program at North Putnam, Kevin Lutes will make the trip to regional.

Cassie Preecs will represent the Cougars in the high jump. Her height of 5-feet-1-inch was good enough for third place and a regional placement.

"The girls have just been great this year," Lutes said with a smile. "We had a lot of personal bests tonight, not a lot of girls running, but a lot of personal bests. It's nice to see Cassie Preecs, her senior year, jump 5-feet-1 and get third place. I've never had a girls get out of sectional before, so this is a good experience and the other girls were excited for her."

Asked how it felt to finally have his track season extended, Lutes laughed and gave all credit to his senior jumper.

"It feels great," he grinned. "She's put a lot of hard work out on the field events where she usually where she scores points. It's a real love for her."

All advancing athletes will compete at the West Lafayette Regional next Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m.
