Max I. Strahl, 83, Greencastle, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 at his residence.

Born Jan. 28, 1926 in Hancock County, he was the son of Everett and Alta Mae Pyle Strahl. He married Madeline Hutcheson Strahl in 1964 and she preceded him in death in 1983.

Mr. Strahl was a United States Marine Corp veteran having served during World War II. He had been a heavy equipment operator with France Stone Company and retired from Dalton Asphalt in 1991. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.1550.

Survivors include six children, Marcia Simmerman and husband Michael of Greencastle, Ronnie Strahl of Cloverdale, Tanis Shaw of Winchester, Beverly New and husband Robert of Greencastle, Rickey Strahl of Greencastle and Vicki Gibson of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, James Strahl and wife Louise of Hazelwood and Billy Strahl and wife Van of Fillmore; a sister, Mary Jane Campbell and husband Andy of North Vernon; a sister-in-law, Lena Strahl of Greenfield; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Virgil Strahl; and a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Harold Bray.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home (formerly Chandler-Hays Funeral Home), 4 N. Percy L. Julian Drive with the Rev. Steve Blaydes officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Croy Creek Cemetery.
