ROACHDALE -- The BUG Club at Roachdale Elementary is pretty popular with the students even though it has nothing to do with insects.

"BUG stands for Bringing Up Grades and honors students who bring up two grades without lowering any others," said school counselor Dan McMurtry. "We add kids every nine weeks when their grades come out. They get their name on a "bug" on the wall and are treated to breakfast."

Friday morning, 130 BUG students packed the lunchroom at the school and enjoyed a free breakfast of cinnamon rolls and milk.

This is the first year for the program and it appears to be a big success.

"We wanted to recognize students in a way other than honor roll," said Jennifer Simpson, one of the co-sponsors of the program.

Simpson, McMurtry and Cathy Proctor came up with the idea of the club and started it at the beginning of the school year. Students in grades one to five participate.

Madison Beaulier, Morgan Asher and Katera Weist don't mind sitting on the floor during their BUG Club breakfast Friday. The three girls all raised two of their grades without dropping any in order to be in the club.

"It's pretty cool. I like the cinnamon rolls," said one second grader. "I hope I'm in it next year too."
