ELLETTSVILLE -- The Greencastle softball squad's season came to a close at the Edgewood Sectional Monday. The Tiger Cubs fell to Sullivan 8-1.

Steady rains delayed the game's start and once the Tiger Cubs took to the field it was clear it was going to be a tough game in more ways than one.

After two scoreless innings, the Golden Arrows put two on the board in the top of the third and another four in the top of the fourth to seize a 6-0 advantage. In those two inning, GHS committed four errors that allowed them to stay alive and do their damage.

Despite the big hit and errors, GHS head coach Robin Knapp was proud of her team's drive to compete.

"We played Sullivan our first game and last game of the season and just to see girls out there diving for balls and trying to pick runners off and finishing plays," Knapp said. "There's a lot to build upon and that's what we're looking for in the off-season and build upon that foundation they've set in this first season and see where we can go with it."

The Tiger Cubs were also hitting the ball hard, but Sullivan's defense found itself in the right spot time and time again.

Greencastle was able to respond in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jessie Bennett scored when the shortstop mishandled Skyanne White's hit.

Sullivan recorded two doubles in the top of the sixth inning and poured on two more runs. Alysia Bennett recorded one of the doubles and went 3-for-3 on the day with two RBIs.

With rains falling, the Tiger Cubs were down to their final chance to make something happen.

In spite of the ill weather, Sullivan's defense stepped up and shut down Greencastle. Shelbi Ellenberger bobbled a shot to centerfield, but held on for the second out of the inning. The game ended when second baseman Bennett scooped up Jordyn Lewis' grounder and flipped to first as she was falling to the dirt to close out the game.

Taylor Pruitt and Bennett accounted for Greencastle's two hits on the afternoon.

Now that the season has come to a close, Knapp is setting her sights on next season. She will retain much of her team from this season and believes that good things are in store for the Tiger Cub program.

"We're looking to have some of these core girls step up as leaders. We are definitely looking for a lot of work in the off-season, but like I said, it's a good foundation to have with so many returning players," she commented. "Once they start clicking, it will be a fun program to be part of."
