Phyllis Deane Hurst

Phyllis Deane Hurst, 78, of Martinsville, died Saturday, May 30, 2009.

She was born in Chandler on Sept. 25, 1930 to the late Harold and Helen Deane. She married Wendell P. Hurst on June 3, 1956, and he preceded her in death.

She graduated from Boonville High School in 1947 and received her B.S. in English and library science from Indiana University in 1951 and her M.S. in education from I.U. in 1975.

Mrs. Hurst worked professionally as both a teacher and librarian. During her teaching career, she taught at high schools and elementary schools in Tell City, Westfield and Martinsville. She retired from Martinsville High School in 1987.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville, the Martinsville Women's Club, Beta chapter of Tri Kappa sorority and several bridge clubs. She enjoyed traveling (especially to Ireland and England) and was an active crafter, participating for more than 20 years in the East Middle School and St. Martin's Catholic Church art fairs. She was an IU basketball fan and lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Survivors included her three children, Nancy Meehan and husband Sean of Arlington, Va., Michael Hurst and wife Pamala of Martinsville and David Hurst and fiancée Tonya of Stilesville; four grandchildren, Katherine and Daniel Meehan and Jacob and Elena Hurst; and her brother James Deane of Boonville.

She was also preceded in death by brother Harold Dean and granddaughter Elizabeth Hurst.

Memorial service will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Costin Funeral Home in Martinsville. A graveside service will follow at Stilesville Cemetery.

Calling will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
