Effort made move-out weekend a success

Friday, June 5, 2009

To the Editor:

The coordinated effort between DePauw University and the Greater Greencastle community for move-out weekend was successful. As students completed their finals and moved home for the summer, they dropped off unwanted items at strategic locations on campus. The items were given to those in the community who needed the items. A special thanks goes to Ted Faires, Tony Robertson, Rob Harper, Dick Shuck, Matt Demmings and their staff from the university. Other thanks go to DePauw's Environmental Club who provided publicity and workers; the Greencastle Civic League, Kiwanis, Rotary, Moose and Elks who donated funds and workers to staff the drop off sites; the Brackney Family who generously provided short term storage; and the county commissioners who were willing to provide an alternate storage site.

We pulled in a sufficient number of items to five the Food Pantry, the Senior Center Store Room, a needy Putnam County family, Coats for Kids and the Humane Society. We even processed some electronics. The support we received from the community and the University was wonderful. The enthusiasm we received was even more energizing.

Many suggestions have been received on ways the program can be improved. Next year, we should be able to accomplish more. Thanks to all who helped.
