BRAZIL -- For a few years now, anyone listening to a radio station or watching the tube heard that all familiar jingle for York Chevrolet/Pontiac/Buick in Brazil and York Chevy/Pontiac/Buick/GMC in Greencastle.
The commercial has the type of music that sticks in one's head.
"We're not No. 1," the singer states, before a chorus roars, "You are!"
"You're No. 1 at York."
Recently, however, the automotive dealership conducted a contest for Wabash Valley artists. The contest, "York Idol," was set to determine who the next commercial singer would be.
"The original singer was a hired talent from an ad agency," Rob York told The Brazil Times.
"Really, the idea wasn't to change it. We, as a family, have enjoyed 'American Idol.' We thought it might be cool to do 'York Idol.' The idea wasn't really to change to jingle, only to have a new person sing it in their own style."
York said approximately 17 performers submitted their own original songs to begin the contest.
On Saturday, selected artists were chosen to perform their song in front of three judges at York Chevrolet/Pontiac/Buick in Brazil. The business had set up a stage and sound system for the performers.
York said 11 contestants were able to perform Saturday.
"They had to bring music prepared to sing," York said.
The judges then narrowed the field to four finalists and Terre Haute resident Josh Whitaker was selected as the new commercial jingle singer.
"I was absolutely blown away by the talent," York said. "We had unbelievable singers, musicians and artists. They really were."
York said approximately 50 people showed up for "York Idol" Saturday.
"The weather was perfect," York said. "It was a very nice event. The competition was really, really good."
York said Whitaker will go into a studio soon to revamp the commercial jingle.
"I would say it would be very similar," York said. "Obviously the lyrics will be the same. We just wanted someone else to sing it and put their spin on it."
