Robert D. 'Butch' Mahoney

Robert D. "Butch" Mahoney, 76, Greencastle, died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at the Plainfield Healthcare Center.

Born July 5, 1933 in Greencastle, he was the son of Paul E. and Edna Curtis Mahoney.

He was a 1952 graduate of Greencastle High School. He married Susan Branch Mahoney on Aug. 31, 1962 and she survives.

Mr. Mahoney had been a heavy equipment operator for the France Stone Quarry (now the Hanson Stone Quarry) for 47 years, retiring in 2000. He was co-owner of the Isle of Erin Bridal Salon in Terre Haute from 1986-1996. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 47, Greencastle; the Scottish Rite, Indianapolis; the Operating Engineers Union; a founding member of the Bainbridge Saddle Club; Route 40 Riders; ISHA; a long-time breeder of American Quarter Horses; and an adult board member with the Putnam County Horse and Pony 4- H.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Erin Mahoney and husband, Rick Sutherland of Cloverdale; a stepbrother, F.L. Priest of Florida; three grandchildren, Brandon Sutherland, Shea Mahoney-Sutherland, and Bree Mahoney-Sutherland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Alice Mahoney; a brother, Lawrence "Larry" Mahoney; and a stepbrother, Reid Priest.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday with a Masonic Lodge Service to be held at 7 pm.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory to the Putnam County 4-H Scholarship Fund.
