Hughes leads county golfers at Invite

TERRE HAUTE -- It was a close one, but it was Heather Hughes of South Putnam who proved to be the better No. 1 of the three county schools that took place in the in the Terre Haute South Invitational Tuesday after noon at Rea Park.

Hughes fired off an 84, six strokes off her season best, while Greencastle golfer Chelsea Samuels followed closely carding an 87. Clover Kayla Langdon turned in a 90, an 18-hole best so far this season.

South Putnam finished sixth as a team with a combined score of 386, while Cloverdale finished seventh with a 406 and Greencastle placed eighth with a 419.

Also scoring for South Putnam was Grace Aker (95), Cierra Perry (102) and Kelsey Searles (105), while Cloverdale received scoring from Elizabeth Wiley (99), Victoria Boyette (106), Sydney Shrum (111) and Brooke Thompson (125). Greencastle scores were contributed by Katie Hedge (97), Diana Wokoun (107) and MaKenzie St. Marie (128).

Tiger Cubs battle North Putnam

DANVILLE -- After two years without a team, North Putnam girls' golf returned to the links Monday with a match against county rival Greencastle.

The Cougars only fielded a two-person team, resulting in an incomplete score. But the two they had did compete with the visiting Tiger Cubs.

Ellen Wilborn carded a 58, while Josie Parent turned in a 63. Wilborn was only 11 strokes off of Chelsea Samuels of Greencastle, who fired off a 47 for day, while Parent was four stokes away from the Tiger Cubs No. 2 golfer Katie Hedge. She turned in a 59 for day, while Diane Wokoun beat her out at No. 3 with a 58.

Greencastle's last scorer was Makenzie St. Marie and she had a 73 for the day. Greencastle finished the match with a score of 237, with Samuels earning the medalist honors.

Owen Valley edges Cloverdale

BRAZIL -- It was close, but in the end the win went to Owen Valley as the Patriots shot a 201, edging out Cloverdale's 207.

Kayla Langdon led the Clovers, firing a 48, while Sydney Shrum turned in a 52 and Elizabeth Wiley carded a 53. Rounding out the Clovers' score was Victoria Boyette, who turned in a 58 for the day.
