CHS grad working for Clay County Extension

Purdue University graduate Jenna Smith recently filled the position of Ag Natural Resources Extension Educator at the Clay County Extension Office.

BRAZIL -- She's only been on the job for a few days, but Jenna Smith has some big shoes to fill.

Smith is the most recent addition to the Clay County Extension Office, now serving in the position of Ag Natural Resources Extension Educator.

Smith replaces Mark Evans, who recently left the position to take over the post of Putnam County 4-H Youth and Development Coordinator.

"I'm up for the challenge," Smith said.

Evans had been in the position for approximately five years, Clay County Extension Coordinator Melanie Brown said.

Smith, originally from Cloverdale, graduated from Purdue University in December 2008 with a Masters in Agriculture Economics.

Smith started in her new position Monday. Before coming to Clay County, Smith said she had spent the past few months working as a substitute teacher and "looking for a job."

"I'm thrilled," Brown said. "She is like a breath of fresh air. She's young and has a lot of ideas. I think she'll be a good addition."

Smith still lives in the Cloverdale area and helps on her family's farm. She said they currently raise cattle, but have raised sheep in the past.

She was a member of the Lucky Clovers in Putnam County for 10 years, showing cattle and sheep at the Putnam County 4-H Fair.

She served as an intern for four years at the Purdue Co-op Extension Service in Putnam County as well.

Smith will divide her time between Clay and Owen counties.

She said she hopes to continue assisting farmers and homeowners who have questions.

"I want to continue programs and possibly start up new ones," she said.
