Sept. 23 is Friendship Day in Greencastle
GREENCASTLE -- Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray signed a proclamation Wednesday naming Sept. 23 as Friendship Day.
Approximately 4,000 roses in dozens will be given away free of charge on one condition: "You can keep one rose to enjoy for yourself, but you must give the other 11 roses to 11 different people," said Tammy Amor, executive director of the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce.
This annual event, which this year is sponsored by Eitel's Flowers & Gifts, The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Asbury Towers Retirement Community, At Home Realty, LLC, Cunningham Insurance, Ivy Tech Community College and RHS -- A Republic Service Co., is intended to spread friendship, goodwill and community spirit among Putnam County Citizens.
The mayor's proclamation states that this day is one of friendship and all citizens are asked to be good neighbors to strangers and friends by presenting them with a rose -- "Thus bringing goodwill, happiness and some sunshine into their day."
Sponsors of the event are requesting participants drop off a canned food item for the Putnam County Food Pantry when they pick up roses.
"This is just one more small way that we can make a difference for our neighbors," said Amor. "If you are unable to bring a canned good, you can still get a dozen roses to pass out to new friends."
The roses will be available at six locations starting at 8 a.m. on Sept. 23: Eitel's Flowers & Gifts, The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Asbury Towers Retirement Community, At Home Realty, LLC, Cunningham Insurance and Ivy Tech Community College (the new campus).
Each year the roses go faster, so the sponsors want to remind and advise everyone to come early -- before they are all gone.
