GREENCASTLE -- Putnam County Hospital OB Nurse and Family Life Center Manager Deborah Miller visited Tzouanakis Intermediate School Wednesday to present their library with a book called, "Jill learns about Nurses Around the Town."

Miller also gave a copy of the book to Ridpath and Deer Meadow schools.

Written by Cynthia Thomas, Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Ball State University, the book describes different fields of nursing.

Miller heard about the book while attending an Indiana Organization of Nurse Executives. She contacted Thomas and asked for copies of the book for local schools.

Thomas sent them to her, provided Miller visited the local schools and presented the books to them.

Third grade students at TZ listened as Miller read the book aloud and answered questions afterwards.

Among the questions asked were what hospital Miller worked for, did she always want to be a nurse and what kind of tools were used in her work.

Miller laughingly explained to one student that as a nurse she doesn't perform surgery.

"I help the doctor sometimes but nurses aren't allowed to do surgery. You have to be a doctor to do that," she said.

The book describes the field of nursing from being a school nurse to working in a long-term care facility.

"I thought it would be good for the kids to understand all the areas available when you are a nurse," she added.
