Greencastle teams advance to regional
GREENCASTLE -- With a time of 20:15, Greencastle High School freshman Colleen Weatherford broke her own cross country record Tuesday night by 35 seconds.
Weatherford's sixth place and Kayla Cash's 12th place finish propelled the Tiger Cubs to fourth place during Tuesday night's cross country sectional meet at South Putnam High School. The boys' team, led by Ryan Stevens' 12th place finish, also ended up in fourth place.
Because they finished in the top five, the Tiger Cubs will compete Saturday at the regional meet at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. The top five runners for the boy's team finished among the top 36 runners Tuesday night, while the top five runners for the girls finished within the top 23 runners.
Going into Tuesday night's race, girls' coach Gary Anderson was hoping his team would place a little higher. First to fourth place was separated by 20 points, with Brownsburg High School winning the girls' meet with a total of 58 points. Greencastle finished with 78, and Tri-West High School rounded out the top five.
"All in all though, our top five girls raced really well," said Anderson. "This is a tough course."
Mike Schimpf, coach of the boys' team, said going in he expected his boys would finish in the top five. Five of the seven boys who competed Tuesday night had their best times of the season.
"At this point all of the boys just want to go out and run more races," said Schimpf. "They are excited about competing at regionals."
Weatherford said going into Tuesday night's meet she was hoping to be able to keep up with the runners.
"I felt really good running my race tonight," she said. "I kind of chickened out on running with the lead pack. I just wanted to go out and run my own race."
Weatherford is looking to better her time at regionals and finish in the 19-minute range.
"My brother has been pushing me to better my times," she said.
Fellow freshman Cash said she felt she ran well.
"I had to push through pain in my leg to get my 12th-place finish," she said.
South Putnam's boys' team finished in ninth place, while the girls team finished 10th. North Putnam's girls' team finished 11th, while the boys' team finished 13th, with only four runners completing the course.
Top finishers for the North Putnam girls' team was Paxton Stephenson with a 18th place finish in 21:45. For the boys it was Dalton Spears' with a time of 20:29.
Kaelynn Cox led the South Putnam girls finishers with a time of 22:52, while Paul Rubino's 44th place finished in 10:01 paced the boys team.
