Betty J. Slack, 77, of Brazil died Monday, Nov. 15, 2009 at her residence following a brief illness.

She was born in Lewis Township, Clay County, on June 13, 1932, the daughter of Harold Fred "Ted" and Mildred N. Wilkins Neal. She attended Brazil High School through her junior year and graduated from Reelsville High School in 1950.

She married Raymond L. Williams Nov. 16, 1950. He passed away Feb. 20, 1965. On Sept. 27, 1969 she married Phillip Slack Jr., who preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1986. She, along with her husband Phil, owned and operated Lawson-Slack Funeral Home in Brazil, Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City and Rentschler Funeral Home in Center Point for many years. Betty retired in June of 2001.

Mrs. Slack was a member of the First Christian Church in Brazil, 7:30 HomeEc Club and Order of Eastern Star lodge 369 in Cloverdale, where she served as the organist and Past Worthy Matron.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and two step-sons, Ronald L. Slack and Stephen R. Slack.

Survivors include her son Michael R. Williams and wife Tina of Cloverdale; six grandchildren, Sam Williams and wife Laura and Lesley Pearcy and husband Gus, Stephen Slack Jr., Stacey Slack, Travis Slack, and Ronald Lee Slack Jr.; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, H. Richard "Dick" Neal and wife Ruth Ann, Fred L. Neal and wife Julia and Samuel R. Neal and wife Deloris, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be at Lawson-Miller Chapel in Brazil at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
