Cougars pounce on Patriots

ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam High School swim teams got their first win of the season Tuesday night when they dominated Owen Valley.

The girls team won 87-62, while the boys won 82-44.

"It was a pretty good day for us," NPHS coach Wesley Richardson said. "But I still think we need to work a little bit on our muscular and cardio endurance. We also still have some techniques we need to work on, but other than that I thought they did fairly well."

The Lady Cougars captured a first place finish in eveyr event except three -- diving, 100-yard butterfly, and 100-yard backstroke. North Putnam didn't have a diver or a swimmer in the 100 fly. In the 100 backstroke, Hasley Foltz took a close second with her time of 1:22.02, just three seconds off the winning time.

Katie Wilcox won the 200-yard IM in 2:45.14, then turned around and swam the 50-yard freestyle, winning with a time of :30.

But the one swimmer that Richardson said stood out the most to him was Mandy Preecs.

"She has improved so much over the last four years and not just with her freestyle," he said. "She is doing the backstroke this year and she hasn't done it before.

"To be honest, I am at a loss of words on how well Mandy has improved," Richardson added.

Preecs took second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle events Tuesday night.

The boys team followed suit, winning nearly every event. The only two that they didn't was the 100 fly and the 400 freestyle relay. They didn't a swimmer for the 100 fly and they finished second in the race.

Jeremiah Ban and Colton Smith cleaned house in the individual races. Ban won the 50 freestyle and the 500 freestyle races, while Smith claimed the victory in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. They were also part of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams that won.

"Jeremiah Ban and Colton Smith are doing really well right now also," Richardson said. "Slowly but surely we are getting were we want to be."
