Melynda Fenwick

GREENCASTLE -- A motion to change service of commitment filed by a Greencastle woman currently serving a 10-year prison sentence has been denied without a hearing by Putnam County Circuit Court Judge Matthew Headley.

Melynda J. Fenwick, 37, was convicted of six counts of Class C felony forgery and six counts of Class D felony theft on Nov. 23. Over a four-year period, Fenwick stole more than $350,000 from Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church in Greencastle, where she had been employed as an administrative financial secretary from late 2004 until her arrest on Aug. 11, 2009.

In her motion, which was filed on March 15, Fenwick asked the court to consider allowing her to leave Rockville Correctional Facility, where she is currently incarcerated, and to continue serving her sentence on house arrest.

In a letter to Headley, Fenwick said she was anxious to find employment and begin doing community service.

Putnam County Prosecutor Timothy Bookwalter filed an objection to Fenwick's motion on March 16, pointing out that she had only served 3 percent of her sentence.

Fenwick also said her crimes were non-violent and that she would pose a minimal threat to the community. Bookwalter disagreed, saying Fenwick has been fired from other jobs for stealing.

After she is released from prison, Fenwick will spend five years on probation.

Gobin currently has a civil suit pending against Fenwick.

  • When I was a young X, I had gotten in trouble with MommaX. I was told to sit on a chair, in the corner for 10 minutes (My transgression was non-violent also). After about 3 minutes, I impatiently asked if I could get up. MommaX said "No, it's only been 3 minutes, I said 10".

Two minutes later, I asked again to get up. "Can get up now, Ive been good?" MommaX said, "I said NO, and don't ask again".

Sure enough, before my 10 minutes was over I asked again to get up. MommaX added another 5 minutes for asking.

Frustrated and determined, I tried a different tactic. I started throwing a tantrum and crying loudly. I was told to shut up before I was given something to cry about.

Stubbornly, I kept up my act. And then, finally justice had been served in the form of a quick swat across the britches and another 10 minutes in the corner.

That is when I learned "Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time".

  • She can't say that her offense was non-violent! She diverted mission funds flagged for Africa, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, etc. Does she know what happened to the people who did not receive the aid donated by the Gobin faithful? Has she considered how her selfish actions are affecting the current and future donations locally, nationally and internationally by those who had given faithfully?

  • Um Feniwck isn't beeing a baby i would greatly appreciate it if you don't make rude and rediculous comments about this. Her children on here everyday and they shouldn't have to go through the BS of everything everyone on here is giving them. I Belive that God is with Her and will be with her until the very end of everything. it doesnt matter what she did it was wrong we all know it but she still has a family to go to that lovers her the same as they did when she was home. So i would greatly appreciate all the Bull Crap to end. Thanks
