Herschel Wayne Nichols, 81, of Indianapolis, formerly of Poland, died on March 29, 2010 at home in the loving embrace of his family.

Herschel was born on April 23, 1928 in Poland and was the son of the late John and Bertha E. Rubeck Nichols.

He graduated from Cloverdale High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Chevrolet Commercial Body after 38 years and was a member of the UAW #23 and the Moose Lodge #500, Speedway. He was married to his one true love, Shirley, and was a true and loyal friend to many, a giving, loving father and a doting grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Shirley R. Lewis Nichols; daughters Sandra (Reza) Jamebozorgi and Kathy (Wayne) Williams; sisters Marjorie Curtis and Kathleen "Kate" Allen; and grandchildren Lisa Faison, Leann Williams, Arianna Jamebozorgi and Adam Jamebozorgi.

In addition to his parents, his sisters Opal Mace, Alberta Sindlinger, Wanita Thomas and Maxine Stidd and brother John Nichols preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale, with the Rev. John Nees officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery, Poland.

Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
