Tiger Cubs run past Chargers in season opener

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Greencastle girls' track team defeated North Montgomery Tuesday 87-36 on the road.

Picking up wins for GHS were Keri Good (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Colleen Weatherford (800), Kelsey Grzesiek (200), Kelsey Murtagh (3,200), Hannah Deer (discus) and Braden Amis (shot put).

The 3,200 relay team of Emily Gill, Ivonne Martinez, Sara Culler and Weatherford won with a time of 11:03, while the team of Grzesiek, Emily Crawley, Brittany Girton and Laura English won the 400 relay in a time of 53.8. The 1,600 relay team of Gill, Davies, English and Weatherford won after posting a time of 4:32.

"Tonight was a typical first meet only with a few new ingredients to make it somewhat ugly," GHS head coach Garry Anderson said. "Our bright spots weren't as bright as we would have wanted them to be and our mistakes were also bigger than we anticipated for a first meet."

Anderson also described some things that might have been contributing factors in his team's performance. He cited the size of the track compared to indoor tracks, different types of handoffs and events than indoor competitions, people in different positions than they're used to, the windy conditions and the fact the meet was an actual competition.

He also is hoping for some positive things when his squad hits the track again tonight.

" Hopefully we will see improvement by the end of the week in many of the short comings we had tonight," Anderson said.

Greencastle travels to Owen Valley tonight to battle the Patriots and Monrovia at 5 p.m.
