DANVILLE -- North Putnam's golf team played its first 18-hole competition of the season Saturday, finishing ninth in the 11-team Danville Warrior Invitational at Twin Bridges Golf Club.

Brandon Volland was the Cougars' low scorer, shooting 102 in sunny, windy and brisk conditions on the par-72, 6,568-yard course. Wes Detienne's 106, Lance Clodfelter's 107 and Colton Smith's 110 completed the four-player total of 425 and Mitch Marlin shot 121 for North Putnam.

"I didn't shoot as well as I'd like," Volland said. "I left a lot out there. It was a windy day and it kept changing."

North Putnam is 1-2 in dual matches, which are nine holes, this season.

"This is our first 18-hole match of the season and the physical aspect is completely different than nine holes," Cougars' coach Nathan Martindale said. "Then, there's the mental aspect, which is the most important part of the game and it's different, too.

"We had a rough going. The conditions were rough with the wind and the cold weather in the morning."

Martindale says North Putnam needs to get better to handle the conditions it played in Saturday.

"It's early on this season and we have some mechanical things to work on," he said.

Monrovia's Rylan Porter was the medalist with a 77. Plainfield's Will Reno and Mike Adams also shot 77 and Porter took low-score honors based upon a tiebreaker, birdieing the 18th hole.

North Putnam plays Tri-West today (Monday) at Twin Bridges, its home course this season.
