Clover track sweeps three-way

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- The Cloverdale track teams are off to their best starts in memory as both the girls' and boys' squads moved to 6-0 with wins over South Putnam and Owen Valley Monday at South Putnam.

The Clover men tallied 75 points, followed by the Patriots' 49 and the Eagles' 42.

For the Lady Clovers it was much closer, as they edged out the hosts 65-64. The Patriots were third with 37.

The final margin was closer than Lady Clover coach Susan Jordan would have liked, but she was happy to keep the win streak alive.

"They did pull it out, including the fact that I had a couple out with injuries," Jordan said.

The Clovers were down two due to injury as well as another who was unable to be at Monday's meet.

"So I was looking at major points right there," Jordan said.

Mariah Oetken took two events for the Clovers in the high jump and the 400. Also winning were Sydney Shrum (300 hurdles), Nikki Routh (1,600), Paige Gruener (100 hurdles) and Amilia Nally (3,200).

"Last year they only had 12 girls. This year I have 28 girls," Jordan said. "This is the first year we've gone with this many wins, and we're a young team."

The depth came in handy, as the Eagles won seven events to the Clovers' six.

Besides winning all three relays, the Eagles also got two wins from Josie Farmer (100 and 200) and one each from Shelby Hacker (shot put) and Rachel Egold (800).

Coach Kate Atkinson was unavailable for comment afterward.

Cloverdale men's coach Andrew Tyler was in a similar position to Jordan, having to juggle some kids due to injury. The results were still strong, though.

"We had to switch a few people around just because of injuries. Joey Rosetti really stepped up big. Justin Grever stepped up big. I had to move Jeff Couse around; he stepped up. Devon Nees had to fill a position in the 4X800 relay."

The Clovers won nine events, including all three relays and two wins each from Joe Rumley (110 hurdles and 400) and Jeff Couse (long jump and 200). Also winning were James Hinton (high jump) and Dillin Gray (300 hurdles).

"I think they did really well. We had several kids get their best times. Chris Worthington posted a personal best. We took 1-2-3 in the long jump and first and second in the high jump," Tyler said.

"If we keep working hard and keep improving, I think we can keep the streak up. I'm pleased," he added. "It's been quite a while since they've started out the season with this many wins in a row."

Adam Masters led the way for the Eagles, winning the discus and shot put. Dylan Hayes won the 800, while Trent Workman took the pole vault.

"I think we had some decent performances," South coach Carl Coons said. "Adam did well in the shot and discus. (Shea) Arnold, Hayes and (Jorge) Cavell did good jobs in their events."

Philosophical as always, Coons liked what he saw from his team, even in a third-place performance.

"We ended up third, but we ran Owen Valley two weeks ago, and we've gained 15 points on them," he said.

"The kids give me what they've got, and that's what's important as far as I'm concerned. They've been improving, so I can't complain," he concluded.
