Local softball, baseball set to kick off sectionals

Thursday, May 20, 2010

GREENCASTLE -- On Monday, the 2010 girls' softball sectionals kick off around the state, with one local team on the first slate of games.

The Cloverdale Clovers will go against Cascade Monday at 7 p.m. in the Tri-West Softball Sectional. Back on April 26 and 27, the Clovers faced the Cadets, dropping both contests. The Clovers were able to bounce back after losing the first game 6-0 and show some muscle against Cascade, falling by two, 11-9.

Also playing in the Tri-West Sectional are a couple of hot county teams. North Putnam will do battle wil Monrovia to begin Tuesday's action, with the Class 2A No. 3 ranked South Putnam Eagles playing the host Bruins in the late game.

Recently, the Cougars and Bulldogs tangled, with North Putnam coming out on top in both contests. In the first game they won 4-3 and they took the second contest 4-0.

The Eagles were able to score a narrow 3-0 win over the Bruins back on April 28. South Putnam owns a 21-1 overall record and has the best record entering the Tri-West tournament.

Also playing Tuesday will be Greencastle at the West Vigo Softball Sectional in the second game of the night.

GHS will play Edgewood, an opponent they faced on April 8 and lost 11-1 to. The Mustangs are also the only team to have defeated county rival South Putnam this season.

Baseball

GREENCASTLE -- The draws were recently made from the Class 2A and 3A Baseball sectionals next week.

In Class 2A, North Putnam will the host this year, but will have to wait until the second day of competition for the quest for a sectional title. Kicking things off will be Cloverdale and Monrovia at 5 p.m. next Wednesday, followed by Tri-West against Speedway.

The Clovers battled the Bulldogs in early April, being dealt 11-8 and 12-2 losses. But Cloverdale is fresh from the Putnam County Championship game, so all bets are off.

In the second day of competition, South Putnam will get things going against Covenant Christian at 5 p.m. Thursday, with the host Cougars going toe-to-toe with Cascade.

This will be the first time the Eagles will see the Warriors of Covenant Christian this season, but the Cadets are a familiar foe for the Cougars. After being rained out, Cascade was able to defeat North Putnam 16-1 in the first game of a double header and won 10-0 in the nightcap.

In the 3A action, Greencastle will travel to South Vermillion to face Sullivan in the first game on Thursday. Again, like South Putnam, the Tiger Cubs have yet to see the Golden Arrows in the 2010 campaign. However, Sullivan boasts a record of 6-15 overall and the Tiger Cubs are coming off their second straight Putnam County Classic Championship, so it will be an interesting matchup to see unfold.

Tickets are available at the gate for both sectionals. The cost is $5 for a single session and $8 for the tournament.
