Star gazing comes back to McCloud Nature Park

Friday, July 16, 2010

NORTH SALEM -- The New Astronomer's Group Meeting (NAG) and the Indiana Astronomical Society (IAS) will meet at McCloud Nature Park on July 24 at 8 p.m. The purpose and intent of NAG is to introduce newcomers to the wonders of the night sky.

McCloud Nature Park provides an ideal spot to star gaze, as the light pollution is minimal and the setting is beautiful.

All types of observation will be discussed -- naked eye, binocular and telescope -- encouraging attendees to discover the wonders above. Telescopes will be available for attendees, and experienced astronomers from the IAS will be on hand to answer questions and provide guidance.

Observers will gain knowledge in how to identify the major planets and stars, summer constellations, use a star wheel and star chart, find some deep sky objects and the proper use of a telescope.

An informational meeting will be held rain or shine at 8 p.m. with observation (weather permitting) to follow.

Park admission and all activities are free and open to the community.

McCloud Nature Park is operated by Hendricks County Parks and Recreation and located five minutes south of North Salem at 8518 North Hughes Road. The park is open from dawn to dusk daily and the Nature Center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
