GREENCASTLE -- A Greencastle man was formally charged with arson Wednesday in Putnam County Circuit Court.

Timothy L. Miller, 40, was charged with Class D felonies arson and criminal mischief. He could face a jail term of up to six years.

According to court documents, Greencastle Police Department Reserve Officer Jeremiah Jackson was dispatched shortly before 10 p.m. Monday to a vehicle fire. The person who reported the fire alleged it had been set by Miller.

When police got to the scene, they found a vehicle on fire at the curb in front of the vehicle owner's home. The vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, Jackson's report said.

Firefighters from the Greencastle Fire Department were called, and the fire was extinguished.

The person who reported the fire told police he had "observed a drunk or intoxicated man dump gasoline on a green Jeep Wrangler, set it on fire, then walk away."

Another eyewitness said she "was driving up the road and noticed Tim Miller standing on the corner, drunk with a gas can next to the Jeep." Moments later, the witness said, she saw the Jeep in flames.

While other officers went to locate Miller, Jackson made contact with the owner of the Jeep, Jerry Miller.

Jerry Miller told Jackson his troubles with Timothy Miller had started on Aug. 10, when the two had argued and Jerry accused Timothy of stealing narcotics from him.

"Jerry Miller stated that over the next few days, Tim continued to harass both he and his wife, Lori," Jackson's report said. "They repeatedly told him to stop, and (Timothy Miller) would only say that 'Jerry would be sorry.'"

Jerry Miller told police he was awakened Monday night by his wife, who told him his Jeep was on fire. He told Jackson he immediately knew who had set the fire.

The 1995 Jeep Wrangler was destroyed. A small camper that was parked next to the Jeep sustained minor heat and smoke damage.

After taking statements at the scene, Jackson was informed by other officers that Timothy Miller had tried to flee when the officers located him, and that "Upon questioning it was apparent that he was heavily intoxicated as he slurred his speech constantly, was very apprehensive and had constant trouble maintaining his balance while standing."

Officers attempted to obtain a breath sample from Miller, but were unable to do so. The officers noted that at no time did Miller make any reference to or admit any guilt for the arson.

Miller's clothing was tested for hydrocarbons, a byproduct of gasoline. Miller's shoes and pants both produced very strong measurements, court records said.

In addition, court records said, Miller appeared to have slight burns on his right hand.

Timothy Miller remains in the Putnam County Jail. His bond has been set at $10,000 cash only.

I have to question the fact that he tried to flee. I honestly can't envision anyone not being able to get away from Reserve Officer Jackson!

Sounds to me like Jerry Miller should be investigated for the narcotics that Timothy Miller supposedly stole from him....hmmmmmm

Putnam County hating again....read the article again, it says Officer Jackson was informed by OTHER OFFICERS that Miller attempted to flee from THEM before being taken into custody...I'd almost be willing to bet this Officer could've won a humanitarian award, and somebody would still find a way to bash him....that goes for all Putnam County L.E., no matter what they do, unfortunately, somebody will always have something negative to say about it.

I saw the Jeep the morning after...gutted. It was a nice looking Jeep too. Matter of fact it was still parked on the street as of this morning.

To the indiana resident, For your info. If you would drive by my house, you'd see my loving husband working on my vehicle, so your little negative statement that made no sense for my loving husband to be investigated for his narcotics that he obtains legally and has taken for 20 years properly is none of your business, so go back to being intimate with your father, we'll keep praying for you! Have a nice day and God Bless You and your whole family.

To lp_27. How does drivng by your house prove anything? So what if he works on a car outside, what has that got to do with narcotics. We have only seen his version of what happened, we would really like to hear what really happened....Sounds as if you are a bit defensive of his properly taken narcotics, after all this is a small town and word travels rather quicky. We should all pray for you and yours.. God Bless

To the sporty Chic, For one if you knew anything about narcotics, then you'd know that when you take them, the Dr. that prescribes them can call and have you bring them into his office and he can even check your blood whenever he has any suspicion. About him workking on a car means "That he has his medicine" Yes, I guess I do get defensive about people like you that can never say anything to somebodys face and has to post it on a computer, You know me and you know where I live. Yes there is 2 sides, so when we go to court, I'd like to have you up there so you could take some notes. Please keep praying for my family, and I'll keep praying for yours. God Bless!!!

Is that you lp_27 deleting comments on here. You don't like what others have to say that is negative! Most people in town do know all of you or atleast has heard of you all. Stop trying so hard to convince us all how righteous your family is, like it was said this is a small town and people talk. So you should grab that notepad and use it correctly from now on like the last deleted comment stated: afterall, YOU are the town gossiper...

Yes people do talk in Greencastle, but what I can't figure out is why, whoever you are (won't say your name)and you know who I am, which I'm not hiding behind a User Name, anyway I hope you all the best, sounds to me you are very bored with your life that's why you're fishing in mine. If you wanna know sooo much, come to court with us and I'll save you a seat if it's bothering you that bad. I'm really not trying to upset you. About my family, Love'm with all my heart....... They are wild as you know what, but what does my family have to do with some nutcase burning my jeep?????????? I've talked to my true close friends and they said people like you just pull the negative out of whatever and run with it, It makes them feel better. Misery enjoys company!!!!!!! Have a great evening, have some faith and wish me luck k. I'll pray for you if you pray for me. Deal?
