VEEDERSBURG -- The Greencastle girls' cross country team finished third overall at the Fountain Central Grand Prix Saturday. The team tallied 79 points for its third place finish.
Colleen Weatherford was Greencastle's top finisher, finishing in fourth place with a total of 21:14. Emily Gill was 13th with a time of 22:33, Kayla Cash was 21st with a time of 23:37, while Abigail Wilson finished 22nd with a time of 23:39.
Finishing in 23rd place was Paige Pickens with a time of 23:43, with Faith Fear placing 47th with a time of 26:01. Cheyenne Fauvergue was 49th in 26:31.
"The course was very tough with parts of it flat and curvy, wooded and short hilly parts, one continuous run without a repeat, and a very long uphill charge to the finish," GHS head coach Garry Anderson said. "This is probably one of the toughest courses in the state."
Anderson stated he was concerned how his younger, more inexperienced runners would respond. He said they weren't sure what to expect from the team, but the team was excited with its third place finish.
Overall, Anderson was pleased with his team's performance.
"West Lafayette simply out-performed the entire field and took charge from start to finish," Anderson said. "We beat several good schools and got a good run from newbies Abigail Wilson, Paige Pickens, and Cheyenne Fauvergue.
"Many of our experienced runners performed well for their first race of the season," he added. "Weatherford and Gill ran really well and were able to run up front with the West Lafayette girls. I think on a course that will be used for sectionals and regional the entire team should get better times and positions."
