No. 1 singles player Kenny Buchanan slams a backhand during Wednesday's contest against Linton Stockton.

GREENCASTLE -- It looked as though the GHS boys' tennis team would grab a win over Linton Stockton early in the match Wednesday, but the resilient Miners came back to shock the Tiger Cubs 3-2.

In singles action, No. 3 singles player Joey Kass cruised to victory, winning in straight sets 6-2 and 6-1.

"Joey played a really nice match tonight," head coach Bart Spencer said. "He came out strong and he was playing a kid that was a really good athlete. I think he's the point guard on their basketball team. Joey just hit his shots and kept the ball in and played his game, which is what you try to do in tennis is play your game and know the other guy's game."

No. 1 singles player Kenny Buchanan and No. 2 singles player Landon Miller both came out strong but were taken to three sets, ultimately losing their rounds.

Buchanan rocketed out of the gate and beat Seth Herndon 6-1 to open the day, but the strong lefty battled back to take the next two sets. Although his No. 1 lost, Spencer was pleased with the effort he gave.

"That was a nice set he played. That kid kept coming back. Watching Kenny come out like that and battle that kid -- that kid was good. He had that wicked left-hand passing shot that he kept putting in the corner," Spencer said.

Miller suffered the same fate as Buchanan, winning his first set in dominating fashion 6-2, but coming up short in sets two and three to the tone of 6-1 in favor of Kris Shipman.

The No. 2 doubles team of Kaden Faust and Lee Hayes defeated Luke Jerrells and Brandon Flater 6-2 and 6-3, while the No.1 doubles team of Cy Spencer and Matt Hendrich lost their match 6-3 and 6-2.

Spencer commented on how close the rounds were for both teams and that the breaks just weren't in the Tiger Cubs' favor Wednesday.

"Two doubles just got a few more in and one doubles hit a lot of beautiful shots, but it would be like a 15-shot rally and the 16th shot was always us. We were still in all of those," Spencer said.

The Tiger Cubs will face Owen Valley tonight at 5 p.m. and it will give the team a chance to see a possible upcoming sectional opponent. Having already seen Northview and Linton Stockton, Spencer believes his team will be able to compete at sectional and possibly get some wins.
