DANVILLE -- The Greencastle Middle School cross country teams ran at the David Landes Invite Thursday at Danville. The girls won with a score of 40, with the boys winning with a total of 32.
Hannah Brattain won the girls' meet with a time of 12:11, almost a full minute ahead of second place. Libby Brush was fourth, with Corrie Romer placing fifth. Sammy Haynes was 12th, Lily Spencer was 18th and Whitney Weinschenk was 24th.
GMS had six runners in the top 25, and the team ran without its No. 3 and No. 7 runners.
The boys were led by Elijah Brattain in second place with a time of 10:46. Taylor Secrest was third and Sedrick Weinschenk was fourth. Weinscheck made his move with 100 yards to go, moving from sixth to fourth place finish. Jacob Lewis was 12th and Nathan Grzeseik was 14th.
Head coach Art Dwigans said spectators saw some nice racing Thursday.
"The parents and coaches were treated to some great racing on the night as people can see from the girls score and the boys put on just as good a show as the girls," Dwigans said. "We knew Danville matched up with us very well from running against them at the Jon Mitchell Invite, and from other coaches that we had run against telling us how good Danville was, that showed in the final score."
He also noted the boys race was won in the last 200 yards of the race and loved how they dug it out. He also said the girls won the same way.
"This is actually how both our teams won, you could see the pain in the kid's faces and how they were starting to tighten up in the race, but they dug down showed who wanted it more," Dwigans said. "And that's made me as proud to be their coach as I have been all year. To have fellow coaches ask what are we doing over here feels great, but it's the kids that go out and perform, and that's what tonight was, a performance. I would have gladly paid to watch these races,"
