TERRE HAUTE -- In its opening game of the girls' soccer sectional, Greencastle blistered South Vermillion 5-0 to advance to a date with Terre Haute North Thursday at 5 p.m.

Greencastle senior Whitney Brotherton scored a hat trick to lead the Tiger Cubs, with Katie Farris and Taylor Runnells adding a goal each.

GHS head coach Curt Bingman was pleased with his team's performance on the night.

"It's actually very good," he said of the win. "The girls have fought hard the last two games before this. They've come our real aggressive and we tied Edgewood 2-2 and beat Monrovia for the last conference game to take second in the conference.

"The girls were fired up to come out here and play. It was tight there the first half. It was a duke out fight in the middle of the field, which is where most of it happened. But I think we, not trying to be partial, but we controlled the ball more than they did and we kept feeding it up, feeding it up. The scoreboard ended up reflecting that," he added.

Brotherton got the Tiger Cub train rolling with 23:17 in the first half, blasting a shot past South Vermillion's keeper. Fellow senior Farris added her goal with 12:59 remaining to have the Tiger Cubs up 2-0 going into the half.

Brotherton scored the Tiger Cubs' opening two goals in the second half less than three minutes apart.

She scored with 22:12 on the clock and again with 19:52 remaining as she popped the ball over the Wildcats keeper before being upended.

Runnells scored the final goal of the night by rocketing a shot past the keeper with her off foot to give Greencastle its 5-0 advantage.

Up next for the Tiger Cubs will be Terre Haute North who defeated the host Braves 5-2 in the opening game. The Patriots are an opponent the Tiger Cubs are familiar with, but Bingman knows the team taking the field Thursday it a far cry from the team Terre Haute North saw earlier in the season.

"We know that going to be a tough game. Our girls are already preparing for it mentally," Bingman said.

The coach said the team would do a light practice Tuesday and hit it hard on Wednesday.

"We took a beating from them earlier in the season, but my girls have improved by leaps and bounds," he said.

Greencastle will face Terre Haute North Thursday at 5 p.m.
