ROACHDALE -- With National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in full swing, the pink ribbons painted on the windows of Niks and Cuts Hair Care are more than just decorations.

Beginning today and continuing through the end of October, $2 of each service provided by Niks and Cuts will go directly to a fund promoting breast cancer awareness. They will also be selling hand towels featuring the breast cancer awareness pink ribbon for $3 each.

Besides all this, they will also accept donations for the cause.

For owner Wendy Smith and stylist Julie Carnes, the disease has hit close to home, and they want to do something to help.

"We have about three people here in town that are survivors," Smith said.

These local residents are Tracy Adams, Pat Allen and Kim Burdine.

"I have three aunts who have had it, and it's really scary," Carnes said.

Carnes's three aunts -- Sara Stuck of Mooresville, Mary Kennedy of Portland Mills and Carolyn Stayton of Indianapolis -- have given the disease an all too real face. All three aunts, all from her dad's family, have had double mastectomies to fight the cancer.

Carnes said it hit her especially hard with Stuck was diagnosed, as she is just a year older than Carnes.

"I wanted to do something for the cause," Carnes said. "I asked Wendy if we could do this, and she said yes.

"I know the money will go for a good cause," she added.

Cancer of another sort has affected Smith, so she was willing to use her business to help out.

"I have leukemia myself, and it's all just plain scary," Smith said.

The duo has also decorated the business, located at the intersection of Indiana and Washington streets, and drawn some attention.

"We've got it all decorated up, and now they're looking, so maybe we'll get people in here for donations," Smith said.

Niks and Cuts is open from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to whenever on Saturday. They can be reached at 522-1607. The business is at 201 N. Indiana St.
