Esther Marie (Pitcock) Evans, 68, of Greencastle, passed away suddenly at her home Monday morning, Oct. 11, 2010.

She was born in Parke County on Feb. 12, 1942 to Wallace and Doris (Perry) Pitcock.

Esther was a 1960 graduate of Roachdale High School. She married James A. Evans on May 31, 1963, and he survives her. Together, they engaged in farming for 47 years. Additionally, Esther was employed at Mallory's, Alpha Chi Omega sorority, DePauw University and retired from Danville Regional Hospital.

Esther loved her family, church and community. She was very active in 4-H throughout her life as a participant and leader. She was renowned as an outstanding cook and seamstress and for having a very kind heart for others. She also enjoyed the outdoors and gardening. She was a long-time member of the Bainbridge Christian Church and Groveland Eastern Star. She was a volunteer for the Putnam County Museum, Food Pantry and Greencastle Christian Church's sewing circle. Additionally, Esther spent much of her time with her grandchildren and loved to tell them about the many adventures she had with them.

Survivors include her husband; three children, Alan Evans (Elizabeth) of Russellville, Sara Sanford (Jim) of Greencastle, and Lisa Evans Washburn (Duane) of Russellville; five beloved grandchildren, Zachory Hunter, Laren Sanford, Ricki Jo-Lynn Evans, Morgan Sanford and Luke Sanford; a brother, Ron Pitcock (Sharon) of Greencastle; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, a brother, Kenneth, and a nephew preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Putnam County Foundation. Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bainbridge Christian Church in Bainbridge with the Rev. Jason Allmor officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.

Burial will follow at Hebron Cemetery near Russellville. Arrangements are entrusted to Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home in Greencastle.
