GREENCASTLE -- Vicki Archer, the Area 30 Career Center adult educator, received certification as a manager in program improvement.

The certification gives Archer a wider breadth of knowledge of adult education programs.

"What it basically does is give you an overview of adult education programs throughout the state plus those in other states," Archer said. "It helps you identify the good and the bad about different programs. If you have this certification you can go into someone else's programs and evaluate different areas of that to let them know what they can do to improve their program."

Archer was one of 14 adult educators in the state to receive the certification. The training for the program included 187 hours of work in a variety of different areas.

Area 30 has adult education programs that serve one of two purposes: either the program helps prepare a student for the General Educational Development test or it helps gain basic knowledge in high school subjects.

"Individuals who don't have a high school diploma but aren't at the ninth to 12th grade level in math, reading or science, then they're classified as adult basic education," Archer said. "Their levels aren't high enough for the materials to do the GED."

Archer said people with a high school diploma can also go through adult basic education courses if their ability level is too low for some reason -- if they want to attend a vocational school, for instance.

Around 150 adults with a variety of goals go through the adult education programs at Area 30 every year.
